Smart studying: finding what works for you
Hi SEE YOUTH’STERS, Amy here.
We’ve all been there. You sit down with your notes, ready to conquer the world, and five minutes later you’re staring into space wondering what on earth you just read. Studying isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing. Some people can read a page once and remember every word. Others (like me) need colourful notes, snacks, and maybe a playlist of lo-fi beats to keep the brain awake. The truth is, finding what works for you is the secret to studying smarter, not harder.
Your learning style
Start by figuring out your learning style. If you’re a visual learner, try using diagrams, colour-coded notes, or mind maps. They make information easier to remember. If you’re an auditory learner, you might prefer explaining concepts out loud or listening to recorded notes. And if you’re a kinesthetic learner, get hands-on. Rewrite notes, walk around while studying, or even use flashcards you can shuffle and move.
Creating a study routine
It’s also important to set up a study routine that suits your energy levels. Some people study best in the early morning when everything’s quiet. Others are night owls who find their focus when the world’s asleep. Experiment and find your rhythm. And don’t forget the golden rule: take breaks. Studying for hours without stopping can actually make you remember less. Short breaks give your brain time to rest and reset.
Turning studying into enjoyment
Another trick is to turn studying into something you actually enjoy. Pair it with music, light a candle, or reward yourself with a snack after finishing a topic. Study groups can also help — explaining things to your friends is one of the best ways to make sure you really understand something.
Lastly, don’t compare your study habits to anyone else’s. We all learn differently, and that’s okay. What matters most is consistency and effort. Stay calm, stay curious, and trust that all your small steps will lead to big results. You’ve got this!
