Your marks are feedback, not your identity

Hi SEE YOUTH’STERS. Lerato here.

Receiving your marks can bring a lot of different feelings. You might feel proud of yourself, disappointed, relieved, or even worried about what your parents and teachers will say. I know that feeling of looking at a mark and immediately wondering what it says about your future.

But one result cannot tell your whole story.

As learners, we are often reminded that good marks can open doors. I believe that education is one of the most important tools we have, especially when we are trying to create better opportunities for ourselves and our families. That is why I take my schoolwork seriously.

At the same time, I’ve learnt that there is a difference between taking your education seriously and allowing your marks to define you.

A mark is information. It tells you what you understood, where you struggled, and where you may need more work. Instead of seeing a disappointing result as proof that you are not good enough, try seeing it as feedback.

Ask yourself the right questions

If your mark is lower than you expected, don’t immediately give up. Ask yourself:

What went wrong?
Did I understand the work? Did I study enough? Did I manage my time properly? Were there topics I avoided because they were difficult?

What can I change?
Maybe you need to practise more questions, change your study method, or ask your teacher for help.

Who can support me?
Speak to your teacher, a classmate, tutor, or someone you trust. Asking for help is not a sign that you are not intelligent. Sometimes it is the smartest thing you can do.

And if you received excellent marks, don’t stop there either. Be proud of yourself, but also think about what helped you succeed and how you can maintain those habits.

There will be subjects that challenge you. There will be results that don’t go according to plan. What matters is how you respond.

Your marks are part of your journey, not your identity. They can show you where you are today, but they don’t decide where you will be tomorrow.

Keep learning. Keep improving. And most importantly, keep believing that you are capable of more.
