5 fun and affordable things to do in KwaZulu‑Natal this festive season

Hey SEE YOUTH’STERS, Johannes here! I’m celebrating the festive season in KwaZulu‑Natal this year, and I’ve rounded up five fun and affordable activities to help you enjoy the magic of this province without breaking the bank. There’s something here for every kind of adventurer.

1. Karkloof Canopy Tour

This is hands down one of my favourites. Glide through the trees on zip‑lines and learn about the forest ecosystem up close. The Karkloof Canopy Tour (based in the mistbelt region of KZN) offers a two‑hour guided experience across 12 platforms and 10 zip‑lines. According to their website, adults pay around R 795 and children (age 6–18) about R 695.

2. Browse Victoria Street Market

If you’re into markets and culture, head over to Victoria Street Market in central Durban. This lively bazaar showcases a beautiful blend of Afro‑Indian heritage — spices, brassware, traditional fabrics, and street food vibes. Over 200 vendors call this place home. Opening hours are: Mon–Fri 8am–5pm, Sat 8am–4pm, and Sun 9am–3pm. There’s also free parking in Fish Market Lane and even a People Mover bus route that runs from 5am to 10pm.

3. Hike to Tugela Falls

For a real nature escape, take the guided hike to Tugela Falls in the Northern Drakensberg. The hike via Sentinel Peak and chain ladders is epic, with jaw‑dropping views and a strong sense of adventure.
Thaba‑Adventures offers this for about R 1 350 per person.

For more details on the trail (distance, difficulty, etc.), you can check out this helpful AllTrails page.

4. Visit the African Raptor Centre

If you love birds, the African Raptor Centre is a must. It’s situated in the Tala Collection Game Reserve, not too far from Durban and Pietermaritzburg. Here’s the good part: tickets are R 70 for adults, and R 40 for children. You can visit from Tuesdays to Sundays, 09:00 – 15:00, and if you’re lucky, catch their flying-show at 10:30am.

5. Relax at the Durban Botanic Gardens

Need a chill, peaceful spot? The Durban Botanic Gardens is perfect. This is Africa’s oldest botanical garden, and entry is totally free (though donations are appreciated). It’s open every day: during summer (16 Sept – 15 April) from 07:30 – 17:45, and winter (16 April – 15 Sept) until 17:15. Bring a picnic, take in the lush trees, and soak up some calm.

A note for the festive season

I’ll be real with you: the holidays are a blessing, but they also highlight inequality. If you can, share a little with those less fortunate. And wherever you go, stay alert and safe. Let’s make this December not just memorable, but meaningful.

Have a jolly, adventurous KZN season!
