Crunch time: How to mentally prepare for
mid-year exams
Hi SEE YOUTH’STERS. Lerato here.
As we head into the thick of exam season, it’s normal to feel the pressure building. Whether you’re in Grade 10 or gearing up for your matric year, the mid-year exams can feel like a mountain.
Coming from a community like mine, where opportunities can be challenging and expectations high, exams have always meant more than just marks — they’re a step towards a better future

Here’s how I mentally prepare when the pressure is on:
Stick to a routine
Waking up and sleeping at the same time every day helps you stay balanced and focused. It also makes it easier to slot in study time without stress.
Set small, clear goals
Instead of cramming everything, break your studying into manageable chunks — like revising one subject per day. This keeps you on track without burning out.
Take proper breaks
Short walks, stretching, or music between sessions can refresh your mind. Don’t feel guilty for stepping away – rest helps you retain more.
Fuel your brain
Eat proper meals and drink water. Junk food might feel like a treat, but it won’t help your focus. Your brain performs better with real energy.
Talk to yourself kindly
Nervous? You’re not alone. Replace negative thoughts with reminders that you’ve prepared, you’re capable, and you’re doing your best.
Reach out if you’re struggling
Don’t suffer in silence. Speak to a teacher, mentor, or friend. Support is part of success.
Your marks don’t define you — but your effort, attitude, and consistency do.
You’ve got this! Keep going.
