Building Your Future: Finding a Career Path Beyond University
Hey there, SEE YOUTH’STERS. It’s Amy, here to chat about the big, looming question that haunts every high school student: What are you going to do after school?
If you’re not sure—or you know that university isn’t in the cards—take a deep breath. University isn’t the only path to a successful, fulfilling career. In fact, there are tons of options out there that don’t require a traditional degree, and some might even suit you better.
What do you enjoy?
First things first: figure out what excites you. Do you love working with your hands, or are you more interested in tech? Think about the subjects or hobbies you enjoy and consider how they could translate into a job. If you’re a people person, something in customer service, hospitality, or sales could be right up your alley. Got a knack for fixing things? Trades like electrical work or plumbing are always in demand and pay well. There are so many industries with diverse roles, and all it takes is a little research to uncover what fits you.
Programmes and training
Another route is apprenticeships or internships. These are great because you get paid while learning on the job—basically, it’s like getting a degree without the debt! Plus, you’ll gain valuable experience and, often, a certification to back it up. Many companies hire from within, so if you work hard, you might find yourself climbing the ranks faster than you’d expect.
Online courses
And let’s not forget online courses. Platforms like Coursera, Skillshare, and Udemy offer courses in practically everything, from coding to digital marketing to graphic design. These courses are way more affordable than traditional uni and let you learn at your own pace. The best part? You can start working on freelance projects as you learn and build up a portfolio.
Networking
Remember, networking is your secret weapon. Even if you’re not heading to university, building connections can open doors you never expected. Reach out to people in fields you’re curious about—whether it’s through LinkedIn, local meetups, or even family and friends. Ask them about their work, how they got started, and any advice they have. A lot of people love sharing their stories and helping out someone eager to learn. Plus, connections can lead to mentorships, internships, or even job offers—the right network can help you discover paths you may never have considered.
So, whether it’s a trade, a creative field, or something entirely unique, remember: a career path doesn’t have to be traditional to be successful. Find what lights you up, put in the work, and trust that there’s more than one way to build an awesome future.
