Balancing Stress During Exams: A Guide to Managing Pressure

Hi, SEE YOUTH’STERS. Lerato here. With exams here, I know many of us are feeling the heat. If you’re anything like me, you might also have parents who have big dreams for you and expect you to perform at your best. That kind of pressure can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already stressed. Here are some ways I’ve learned to handle the stress and balance expectations – I hope they can help you too.

You can’t control everything

First, focus on what you can control. Remember, you’re putting in the work, and that effort matters more than perfection. Set realistic goals for each study session, and do your best. Sometimes, we get caught up worrying about results we can’t predict, but if we put in our best effort, that’s something to be proud of, no matter the outcome.

Be open and communicate

Talk openly with your parents if you’re comfortable. Sometimes they don’t realise how their expectations make us feel. Share your goals with them and let them know you’re trying hard. This can help them understand your perspective, and you might feel a bit of relief knowing you’ve been honest.

Take breaks

Take regular breaks to manage stress. Studying non-stop can lead to burnout, which isn’t good for anyone. Try the Pomodoro Technique – study for 25-30 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. Use your breaks to clear your mind and do something calming, like taking a short walk, breathing exercises, or listening to music.

Find time to do things you enjoy

Balance your stress and studying activities with some me-time, and do things you enjoy. This is important to keep your brain engaged, but not in overdrive. Hydrate regularly with water, don’t drink too much coffee, stick to your self-care routine, and make sure you’re eating good, nutritional food that gives you energy.

Keep things in perspective

Exams are important, but they don’t define your worth or your future. You have many talents and qualities that go beyond test scores. Remember, one exam season isn’t the whole story – it’s just one part of your journey.

Balancing stress isn’t easy, but with some planning and self-care, you can get through it. Stay focused on what you can control, give your best, and remember you’re not alone in feeling the pressure. You’ve got this – go out there and make yourself proud!
