Rest, reflect, reset: making the most of your mid-year break
Hi SEE YOUTH’STERS. Lerato here.
Exams are finally over and the mid-year break has arrived. After all the long nights, early mornings, and stress of exam season, I know a lot of us are feeling drained: emotionally, mentally, and even physically. So, before we rush into what’s next, I want to remind you that it’s okay to slow down. In fact, it’s necessary.
This is the perfect time to rest. Sleep in a little. Spend time with people you love. Watch that series you’ve been putting off or read something just for fun. Resting doesn’t mean you’re lazy—it means you’re giving your body and mind the recovery time they deserve.
But don’t stop there. Use this quiet time to reflect on the first half of your year. What went well? What challenged you? What do you want to change going forward? For me, this break is a chance to think deeply about my goals, not just for school, but for life. Sometimes, we’re so busy surviving that we forget to check in with ourselves.
And lastly, reset. Set a few simple intentions for the next term; nothing too heavy. Maybe it’s staying on top of schoolwork earlier, applying for a bursary, or making more time for your mental health. This is your time to prepare gently for what’s ahead.
If you’re able to, look out for opportunities like volunteering, online short courses, or even a part-time holiday job. Just something small to build skills and keep your mind active.
This break doesn’t have to be about productivity. But it can still be meaningful. You’ve made it through half the year, and that’s already something to be proud of.
I’ve created a simple Reflection & Reset Planner you can use during the holidays. It’s nothing fancy—just a few honest questions to help you think about how things are going and what you want to focus on next.
You can print it out or write the answers in your notebook. Take your time with it. No pressure, no judgement, just a quiet moment to check in with yourself.
Take care, rest well, and come back stronger. You’ve got this.
