Spring cleaning your goals: What do you want to achieve before the end of the year?

Hi SEE YOUTH’STERS. Lerato here.

There is something about spring that makes me want to take a step back and look at where I am. We are already well into the year, which means the goals I wrote down at the beginning of the year are no longer just plans. It is time to ask myself an honest question: Am I where I thought I would be?

If the answer is no, that does not mean the year is over.

Sometimes we start the year with big plans. We want better marks, a new skill, a bursary, a healthier routine, or a clearer idea of what we want to do after school. Then life happens. School becomes busy, responsibilities at home increase, and some of those goals get pushed aside.

This is a good time to reset.

Look at what you’ve achieved

Before deciding what needs to change, recognise what you have already done. Maybe your marks have improved in one subject. Maybe you have become more confident speaking in class. Maybe you applied for an opportunity that you were previously too nervous to try.

Small progress still counts.

Be honest about what isn’t working

If something hasn’t gone according to plan, ask yourself why. Are you struggling with time management? Are you leaving your studying until the last minute? Are you spending too much time on your phone?

Be honest, but don’t be harsh on yourself. The purpose of reflection is to understand what needs to change, not to make yourself feel guilty.

Choose your priorities

There are only a few months left in the year, so you don’t need twenty new goals. Choose two or three things that really matter.

For example, you could focus on improving one subject, researching university or college applications, applying for bursaries, or preparing properly for your final exams.

Write your goals down and break each one into smaller steps. A big goal becomes less frightening when you know what you need to do next.

Most importantly, remember that your year is not defined by how it started. You still have time to make progress.

Spring is a reminder that growth does not happen all at once. Sometimes it starts quietly, with one decision to try again.
