Confidence isn't something you wake up with
Hi SEE YOUTH’STERS! Amy here.
I used to think confident people were just… born that way.
You know the type. They put their hand up first in class, introduce themselves without overthinking it, and somehow manage to walk into a room like they’ve been there a hundred times before.
Meanwhile, I’m still rehearsing how to say “Hi” in my head.
Okay, maybe not every time. But you get the point.
The older I get, the more I realise confidence isn’t something you suddenly wake up with one morning. It’s something you build, one small moment at a time.
For me, that looked like saying yes to opportunities that felt a little scary.
Walking into a professional environment for the first time definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone. I didn’t know everyone. I wasn’t sure what questions to ask. I worried about saying the wrong thing or looking inexperienced.
Then I remembered something… of course I’m inexperienced. That’s literally why I’m there. The minute I stopped expecting myself to know everything, I started learning so much more.
I asked questions. I introduced myself to people. I listened carefully. Every conversation made the next one feel a little easier.
That’s how confidence grows—not in giant leaps, but in tiny decisions to keep showing up.
I see the same thing happening at school. Every time I volunteer an answer, perform with my guitar, or speak in front of my class, it gets a little less intimidating. Not because I’ve become fearless, but because I’ve proved to myself that I can do hard things.
I don’t think confidence means never feeling nervous. I think it means deciding that being nervous isn’t going to stop you.
So if you’re waiting until you feel completely ready before trying something new, here’s your sign to stop waiting.
Apply for the opportunity, ask the question, start the conversation!
The version of you that’s confident in the future is built by the choices you make today.
And who knows? One small step today might be the moment your future self looks back on and says, “That’s where it all started.”
