AI is a tool, not a shortcut

Hi SEE YOUTH’STERS. Lerato here.

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is becoming part of everyday life. Many learners are already using it to answer questions, explain difficult concepts and even help with homework. While AI can be incredibly useful, I’ve learnt that the best way to use it is as a learning partner, not as someone who does the work for you.

It’s easy to copy an answer and submit it. But if you don’t understand what you’ve handed in, you’ve missed the real opportunity to learn.

One of the best ways to use AI is to ask it to explain things differently. If you’re struggling with maths, science or accounting, you can ask AI to explain a concept in simpler language or give you another example until it makes sense.

AI can also help you study smarter. You can ask it to create quizzes from your notes, test your knowledge, or summarise long chapters into key points for revision. Instead of replacing your studying, it helps you make your studying more effective.

There are also some exciting tools designed specifically for learning. NotebookLM, developed by Google, allows you to upload your own notes or study material and even turns them into an audio discussion that sounds like a podcast. Listening to your notes while travelling or doing chores can be a great way to revise in a different way. You can learn more at https://notebooklm.google.com.

Other tools like Khan Academy offer free lessons across many school subjects and now include AI-powered learning support. Visit https://www.khanacademy.org to explore free resources.

The important thing to remember is that AI should help you think, not think for you.

The knowledge you build today becomes the foundation for your future career. No technology can replace your curiosity, your effort or your ability to solve problems.

Use AI wisely, ask questions, challenge yourself, and always keep learning.

Remember, the smartest learner isn’t the one who has all the answers. It’s the one who never stops asking questions.
