When I first started spending time around businesses and entrepreneurs, I thought success was all about having a great idea. I quickly learnt that’s only one small part of it.

The biggest thing I noticed was that almost every successful person had the same core skills, even if they worked in completely different industries.

Communication is one of them.

It sounds simple, but it’s everywhere. Whether someone is speaking to a customer, replying to emails, pitching an idea or solving a problem with a colleague, they’re constantly communicating. It’s not just about talking. It’s about listening properly and making people feel understood.

Then there’s problem-solving.

No workplace runs perfectly. Deliveries are late. Technology stops working. Customers change their minds. The people who stand out aren’t the ones who never face problems. They’re the ones who stay calm and find solutions.

Time management is another skill that surprised me.

Running InternationalT has taught me that nobody is standing over you reminding you what needs to be done. You have to manage your own deadlines, priorities and responsibilities. That’s something you can start practising while you’re still at school.

One skill I think people overlook is adaptability.

Things change all the time. A design idea might not work. A supplier might fall through. A customer might ask for something different. Being able to adjust without giving up is one of the biggest advantages you can have.

The cool thing is that none of these skills are reserved for adults.

You can practise them every day. Group projects teach communication, sport teaches teamwork, school deadlines teach time management. Even running a small side hustle helps you develop resilience and responsibility.

The next time you get the chance to visit a workplace, don’t only pay attention to what people do. Pay attention to how they do it—those are often the skills that will take you the furthest.
