Protecting your peace: Looking after your mental health every day

Hey SEE YOUTH’STERS, Johannes here.

When people hear the word “health”, they usually think about exercise or eating well. Those things are important, but there’s another part of your health that deserves just as much attention: your mental wellbeing.

Life can get busy. Between school, exams, friendships, family responsibilities and trying to figure out your future, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The good news is that looking after your mental health doesn’t always require huge changes. Often, it’s the small things you do consistently that make the biggest difference.

Get moving

One of the best ways to clear your mind is to move your body. You don’t have to spend hours in the gym. Go for a walk, play a sport, ride your bike or do a quick workout at home. Exercise releases chemicals in your brain that help improve your mood and reduce stress.

Spend time outdoors

I’ve always believed that nature has a way of putting life into perspective. Whether it’s a hike, a walk through a local park or simply sitting outside for a while, fresh air and sunshine can help you reset after a stressful day.

Take a break from your screen

Social media can be fun, but too much time online can leave you feeling anxious or constantly comparing yourself to everyone else. Give yourself permission to unplug every now and then. Your mind needs that space.

Talk to someone you trust

You don’t have to carry everything on your own. Whether it’s a parent, teacher, friend or coach, speaking to someone you trust can make a difficult situation feel a little lighter.

Remember that balance matters

Looking after yourself isn’t selfish. It’s necessary. Rest when you need to. Laugh often. Spend time doing things that make you feel like yourself.

Your mental health deserves the same care and attention as your physical health. Some days will be harder than others, and that’s okay. Keep showing up for yourself, one day at a time. The strongest version of you isn’t just physically fit. It’s someone who knows when to push forward and when to slow down.
