Before you step into any new environment, take a moment to prepare yourself. Not just by choosing what to wear or packing your bag, but by preparing your mindset.

Go in with curiosity.

You don’t have to know everything. In fact, you’re there to learn. Ask questions when it’s appropriate, listen carefully, and pay attention to how people work together. Notice how they communicate with clients, solve problems and manage their time. These are skills that apply to almost every career.

It’s also important to observe yourself.

How do you feel in that environment? Which tasks do you enjoy? What makes you feel challenged? Sometimes an exposure opportunity doesn’t show you what you want to become. Instead, it shows you what doesn’t suit you, and that’s just as valuable.

Remember that first impressions matter. Arrive on time, dress neatly, greet people respectfully and show appreciation for the opportunity. These small actions demonstrate maturity and professionalism, even if you’re still at school.

Don’t worry if you feel nervous. Most people do this when they’re entering a new environment. Confidence doesn’t always come before the experience. Often, it grows because of the experience.

When the opportunity is over, spend some time reflecting. Ask yourself what you learnt, what surprised you, and what skills you would like to develop. Writing these thoughts down in a notebook can help you recognise your own growth over time.

Every exposure opportunity is another step forward. You don’t need to have your future completely mapped out. You simply need to stay open to learning.

Sometimes the biggest opportunity isn’t the one that gives you all the answers. It’s the one that helps you ask better questions.
