Discipline will take you further than motivation
Hi SEE YOUTH’STERS, Johannes again. Let’s talk about something real. Motivation feels amazing. It gives you that spark, that energy, that “I’m going to change my life today” feeling. But sometimes it just doesn’t last.
That’s where most people fall off. Not because they can’t do it, but because they were relying on motivation instead of something stronger.
In fitness, I see it all the time. Someone joins the gym, feels inspired, trains hard for a week or two, then disappears when it gets tough or uncomfortable. On the other hand, the people who actually get results are not always the most motivated. They are the ones who keep showing up anyway.
Your future is no different.
By now, you’ve probably had some exposure to different careers or opportunities. Maybe you’ve felt inspired by something you saw or someone you met. That’s a great start, but inspiration is just the beginning.
What matters now is discipline!
And I’m not talking about huge, life-changing actions overnight. I’m talking about small, consistent choices. The kind you repeat even when you don’t feel like it. Just like being at the gym, right! Here’s some small steps you can try:
- Set time aside to learn something new
- Ask questions, even if they feel simple
- Stay curious about different paths
- Follow through on opportunities you get
And the best idea? Shadow people at work! Cell C’s Take a Child to Work initiative has taught me the value of going to work to actually understand what people do, what they enjoy, and how they motivate themselves and feel rewarded. I’ve learnt so much from shadowing others at work; it certainly helped me realise what I enjoy, and what I really don’t!
Every time you show up, you are building more than knowledge, confidence, and resilience. And those are the things that actually carry you forward in life.
Just like training, progress is not always visible in the beginning. But if you stay consistent, it will show.
So don’t wait for motivation to find you. Build habits that support where you want to go, because I believe discipline will always take you further than motivation ever could!
