Taking care of your mind while chasing your goals
Hi SEE YOUTH’STERS, Lerato here.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt as a student, it’s that success means nothing if your mind and body are falling apart. Where I’m from, we’re often taught to “push through” no matter how tired or overwhelmed we are. But lately, I’ve realised that rest isn’t weakness; it’s what keeps us strong enough to keep going. As you push through the last leg of the year, here’s some tips to keep you going and caring for yourself, as well as a checklist to keep you accountable.
Listen to your body and your emotions
When you’re exhausted, anxious, or struggling to concentrate, your body is trying to tell you something. Ignoring those signs only makes things worse later. Take breaks. Stretch. Drink water. Step outside for fresh air. Sometimes, ten quiet minutes away from your books can recharge your focus more than an extra hour of studying.
Talk about it
Stress, anxiety, and burnout are real. You might not always have access to therapists, but there are free resources available. The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) offers free support and counselling through WhatsApp on 087 163 2030 or via their website: www.sadag.org. Reaching out doesn’t make you weak; it makes you human.
Find small ways to feel joy
Music, journalling, prayer, or even laughing with friends—all of it matters. When you do things that bring you peace, you make space for energy and creativity to return. Your happiness is just as important as your grades.
Redefine productivity
You don’t need to be “busy” all the time to be doing well. Productivity also means knowing when to rest, when to ask for help, and when to take care of yourself first. We can’t always control the world around us, but we can choose how we take care of ourselves in it.
Remember: your mind is your biggest tool for success. Protect it. Taking care of yourself doesn’t take away from your success; it strengthens it. One step, one day, one checkmark at a time.
