There’s something about being demotivated that puts your entire mood in a funk, but you don’t have to stay there forever. It helps to have a lit playlist of songs you can turn to for that extra motivational pep talk we all need once in a while. Here are a few ‘pick me up’ songs to add to your playlist.
‘Survivor’- Destiny’s Child
“I’m a survivor, I’m not gon’ give up. I’m not gon’ stop. I’m gon’ work harder. I’m a survivor. I’m gonna make it. I will survive- keep on survivin’…”
If you’re going through a break-up or a really tough time in your life right now, this song might lift your spirits. We strongly believe in affirming yourself and realising your greatness, and clearly, so does Destiny’s Child. ‘Survivor’ might be a golden oldie, but the lyrics are enough to make you feel unstoppable.
‘Run the World’- Beyoncè
“This goes out to all my girls. That’s in the club rocking the latest. Who will buy it for themselves and get more money later. I think I need a barber. None of these guys can fade me…”
It’s no secret that gender inequality is a real thing, but artists like Beyoncè let us know that even in circumstances like that, we’re still powerful. You run the world and
you have to trust that. This is no shade to the guys, but we’re allowed to sing loudly and proudly about our desire for independence and power. So ladies, sing and dance and achieve everything you want- even Beyoncè believes in you!
‘Speak’- Jhenè Aiko
“Woke up this mornin’. Heart was beatin’ out my chest. So excited, realizin’ that you weren’t here to judge me. No one to impress. I decided that I liked it, yeah”
Are you in a toxic relationship or situation that you’re afraid to leave because you think you can’t do better? Jhenè gave us this song for you. You don’t realise the power that you have right now, and that has a lot to do with the fact that you’re hurt and emotional- but walking away is the real victory. You’ll be so much happier and free when you finally gather the courage to exit situations that no longer serve you. It’ll take some time, but you’ll get there.
‘Rise Up’- Andra Day
“And I’ll rise up. I’ll rise like the day. I’ll rise up. I’ll rise unafraid. I’ll rise up, and I’ll do it a thousand times again”
Andra Day may as well be the demotivation whisperer because she created a masterpiece with this song. If you’re feeling broken down and tired,
we understand- it happens to the best of us. Listen to this song and we promise you’ll gain a bit more perspective. It helps to realise that you’re so much bigger and stronger than your struggles and that there’s nothing you can’t get through.
‘Hard’- Rihanna
“They can say whatever, I’ma do whatever. No pain is forever, yup, you know this. Tougher than a lion, ain’t no need in tryin’. I live where the sky ends, yup, you know this.”
This song is the true definition of flexing. Rihanna is known for many hits, but this one is definitely a fave. You’ll come across critics in your life who might try to break you, and it’s important to let them and yourself know that they don’t have that much power. This song doesn’t only get you feeling motivated to dust yourself off, but it also promotes self-love. We love that for you… and your playlist.
Music may not be able to take all your problems away or get you motivated immediately, but sometimes that one “aha” moment is all you need to at least try to face and conquer the odds.
